Naturalization in Germany

Naturalization in Germany

Many Romanian citizens have been living in Germany for many years, working here, starting families, and building a future for themselves. Even though EU citizens already enjoy many rights in Germany, many people also wish to obtain German citizenship—for example, for greater security, better career opportunities, or a lasting sense of belonging.

It does not matter whether you were born in Romania or have lived in Germany since childhood. Under certain conditions, you can apply for German citizenship.

After successful naturalization, you receive the same rights and obligations as German citizens.

These include, among other things:

  • the right to vote in Germany
  • unrestricted right of residence
  • freedom of movement within the EU
  • visa-free travel to many countries
  • access to certain professions / civil service careers
  • consular protection abroad

Requirements for Naturalization

Certain requirements must be met for naturalization. These generally include:

  • legal residence in Germany for at least five years
  • verified identity and nationality
  • sufficient knowledge of German (at least B1)
  • ability to support oneself (gained employment)
  • no serious criminal offenses
  • Knowledge of the German legal and social system

Depending on your personal situation, exceptions or exemptions may be possible.

Naturalization test

In many cases, a naturalization test must also be taken.

This covers topics such as:

  • Life in Germany
  • Rights and obligations
  • Democracy and the Basic Law
  • History and society

The test consists of 33 questions. To pass, at least 17 questions must be answered correctly.

For example, those who hold a German school or university degree often do not need to take the naturalization test.

What documents are commonly required?

Depending on the situation, different documents may be required.

The following are often required, among other things:

  • Valid ID card or passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of residence in Germany
  • Employment contract and proof of income
  • Rental agreement
  • Language certificates or school transcripts
  • Proof of the naturalization test, if applicable

Translations or additional documents are often required, especially for Romanian documents.

Naturalization Process

The process usually takes place in several steps:

  1. Review of eligibility requirements
  2. Compilation of documents
  3. Submission of application
  4. Processing and review by the authorities
  5. Naturalization test, if applicable
  6. Decision on naturalization
  7. Issuance of the certificate
  8. Application for a German passport and ID card

Processing times may vary depending on the city and the relevant authority and depend heavily on whether all necessary documents are submitted correctly.
