Discover Germany

Germany is a country with a fascinating variety of landscapes, a rich history, and a modern infrastructure. For Romanian visitors, the country offers not only a short travel distance but also a wide range of opportunities for tourism, business activities, and cultural exchange. This overview will help you understand the key facts and plan your trip effectively.

A Geographical Diversity from Coast to Alps

With an area of approximately 357,022 km², Germany stretches across an impressive north-south expanse of 876 km and a west-east width of 640 km. The landscape is characterized by the coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in the north, gentle low mountain ranges in the center, and the majestic Alps in the south. The country’s highest point is the Zugspitze at 2,963 meters.

The capital, Berlin, is not only the political center but also the largest city, with a population of approximately 3.4 million. Other major metropolitan areas include Hamburg (approx. 1.8 million), Munich (approx. 1.3 million), Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main. These cities serve as hubs for business, culture, and transportation.

Political Structure: An Overview of the 16 Federal States

Since its reunification in 1990, Germany has been divided into 16 federal states. The political system is a parliamentary democracy, led by the Federal President as head of state and the Federal Chancellor as head of government. Each federal state has its own capital and specific characteristics:

  • Baden-Württemberg (Stuttgart) and Bavaria (Munich) are economically strong regions in the south.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia (Düsseldorf) is the most populous state with nearly 18 million inhabitants.
  • Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen are city-states that function as both cities and federal states.
  • The eastern states, such as Saxony (Dresden), Thuringia (Erfurt), and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Schwerin), offer a unique blend of history and nature.

In total, about 84 million people live in Germany, spread across these diverse regions, each of which cherishes its own cultural distinctiveness.

Culture, Nature, and Unforgettable Sights

Germany is a country with a rich cultural heritage and an impressive number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites—currently 54. From historic old towns to magnificent castles and modern museums, there is something for everyone to discover.

Among the most popular destinations are:

  • Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg: The world’s largest model railway layout.
  • Europa-Park in Rust: One of Europe’s largest theme parks.
  • Phantasialand in Brühl: Known for its innovative roller coasters.
  • Nürburgring: The world-famous racetrack for motorsports fans.
  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber: A perfectly preserved medieval town.
  • Berlin: The vibrant capital with countless monuments and memorials.

Nature also offers a wide range of experiences, from hikes in the Alps to bike tours along rivers and lakes, and walks through dense forests.

Travel and Mobility: Simple and Sustainable

The German transportation network is very well developed and enables fast and convenient travel between major cities, particularly thanks to the ICE high-speed train system. Special passes and offers are available for tourists, making it easier to explore cities and regions.

A particularly attractive option is the Deutschland-Ticket (currently around €63 per month), which allows you to use all regional public transportation (bus, train, tram) throughout the country. Sustainable mobility is actively promoted, making cycling and walking popular options as well.

The following important entry requirements apply to Romanian citizens:

  • A visa is generally not required for short stays of up to 90 days.
  • Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the planned end of your trip.
