Which Policies Are Truly Essential
Insurance protects against financial risks and unexpected costs in everyday life. There are many different types of insurance in Germany—but not every policy is truly necessary. Protection against existential risks is particularly important—that is, situations that could have serious financial consequences without insurance.
Personal Liability Insurance
Personal liability insurance is one of the most important types of insurance. It covers damages you accidentally cause to other people or their property. Even minor accidents can result in high costs. Without insurance, you have to pay for these damages yourself. That’s why personal liability insurance is recommended for almost everyone.
Automobile Liability Insurance
Anyone who owns a car or other vehicle is required by law in Germany to have automobile liability insurance. It covers damages caused to other people or vehicles by your own vehicle. Without this insurance, no vehicle may be used on public roads.
International Travel Health Insurance
International travel health insurance usually costs only a few euros per year, but can cover very high costs in an emergency. This includes medical treatment abroad or necessary repatriation to Germany. This insurance is particularly useful when traveling outside of Germany.
Not every insurance policy is necessary for everyone. Some insurance policies make sense depending on your personal circumstances.
Home Contents and Building Insurance
Anyone who owns valuable items or their own property should consider home contents or building insurance.
These policies protect against damage caused by, among other things:
Legal Protection Insurance
Legal protection insurance can be helpful in the event of legal disputes—for example, regarding employment law, rental law, or traffic law. Whether this insurance is worthwhile depends heavily on your personal situation.
Private Accident Insurance
Private accident insurance supplements disability insurance and provides coverage for accidents that occur during leisure time. People with high-risk hobbies or sports activities, in particular, benefit from this additional coverage.
Daily Sickness Benefit Insurance
Daily sickness benefit insurance can be a wise choice for self-employed individuals or high-earning employees. It helps offset loss of income during prolonged illness.
Term Life Insurance
Term life insurance is particularly important for families or individuals with loans. In the event of death, dependents receive financial security, and ongoing obligations can be better covered.
Not every insurance policy offered actually provides a significant benefit. Some policies are expensive or offer only minimal coverage.
Cell Phone Insurance
Cell phone insurance policies are often expensive and come with many restrictions. In many cases, the insurance isn’t worth the cost.
Eyeglass Insurance
The benefits of eyeglass insurance are often limited, while the monthly premiums can be relatively high.
Glass Breakage, Luggage, and Outstanding Debt Insurance
These insurance policies often offer poor value for money or cover risks that are already protected by other insurance policies.
Capital-Accumulating Life and Funeral Expense Insurance
Due to high costs and low returns, these insurance policies are often considered unattractive today.
Daily Hospitalization Benefit Insurance
In many cases, statutory health insurance plans already provide sick pay, which is why additional daily hospitalization benefit insurance is often unnecessary.
The most important protection is safeguarding against existential risks. The following are particularly recommended:
Other types of insurance may be advisable depending on your personal circumstances, but should always be carefully evaluated. Insurance for minor everyday risks or purely convenience-based benefits, on the other hand, is often unnecessary.
